The First Album
The band was ecstatic when their first album, titled, ‘Queen’, was dropped in 1973. It amazed them that they were in record stores. However, that feeling didn’t last very long as their album didn’t sell all that well. A big part of the issue was that people haven’t heard of them at the time. Once their second album, ‘Queen II’, dropped, things changed. They finally found their sound, and with it, they had the chance to broadcast their music on TV during a show called Lost Top of the Pops in February 1974. Through this, they began gaining more publicity and traction as a result.
Their Big Break
Queen managed to secure a spot as the opening act for Mott the Hoople, which became the big break they needed. The English rock and roll group had a significant following in the UK. After they spent some time touring together, Mott the Hoople asked Queen to perform in the US as well, and naturally, the band immediately said yes. Unfortunately, the tour had to be cut short when Brian May got sick with Hepatitis B. They were about to perform their last show in Chicago, but May was literally yellow, leading to the doctors sending him home. May nearly got to the point where his arm would have had to be amputated, but thankfully he was able to overcome the illness.
