A Legend In The Making

Freddie had the feeling he would become something big right from the start. At the beginning of his music career, he followed a band named Smile that already consisted of the soon-to-be Queen drummer and guitarist Roger Summers and Brian May. Freddie absolutely loved their sound and was determined to become a part of the band and their legacy. Freddie was so convinced of his own success that former Smile musician Chris Smith recalled that Freddie constantly commenting on how he will be a pop star. It got to the point that one day when Smith saw Freddie looking down, leaning his head in his hands and covering his face that when Smith asked what was wrong, Freddie replied: “I’m not going to be a pop star. I’m going to be a legend!”

An Opportunity

An incredible thing happened in 1970. The lead singer of Smile had left the band, and then the spot was open. Freddie seized the opportunity immediately. He didn’t want the band to break up since they had such a unique sound that was truly special. He renamed the band Queen as soon as he became the lead singer. Due to the name being associated with the LGBTQ community, it raised a great deal of controversy. Even so, Freddie saw the name as regal and outrageous, which is precisely why he chose it.
