‘I Want to Break Free’ was a huge hit, and it could have also been a hit in the US and UK, but once they released the music video, things changed. The band was so excited about the possibility of dressing in drag when the opportunity came, but they didn’t anticipate the reaction that they received. The video was referencing a popular British TV show named ‘Coronation Street’, so naturally, European countries understood it. The US didn’t. Because of this, the video was seen as controversial in the US, with many stations banning it.

Hoping to make an epic comeback, the banning of their video was a tough blow for Queen. Even while they became more globally known, their popularity in the US dropped drastically. As a result, they decided to perform the 1985 Live Aid Concert at Wembley Stadium. The band paid for nearly an hour on an eighteen-minute clock. They did have a significant advantage over the other performers: they knew how to work a stadium crowd.
