The best performance of their careers, the Live Aid concert renewed their motivation. Afterward, the band’s dry spell of music creativity felt like it had finally ended and they were ready to take on the world once again. People were fawning over the band, filling up stadiums to see them live. However, something was off with Freddie. The crowds felt like these performances may be the last of his major performances ever. Unfortunately, this would turn out to be true.

The Diagnosis

Freddie knew he wasn’t well, beneath his electrifying performance, he was hiding a secret. He was HIV positive. Jim Hutton, his partner, said that Freddie was diagnosed in 1987. The public didn’t know of this until his last days. Once the band heard the news, they were devastated. Freddie knew he didn’t have much time left, and he refused to spend the remainder of his life in bed. He wanted to keep writing and singing until he couldn’t anymore, so he did. The band was respectful and kept his situation under wraps, but soon enough, it became more apparent.
