Not The Only One
Once Freddie came out to Mary as a bisexual, he began dating woman and men alike in the open. He started dating Jim Hutton, who he met at a bar in 1984. By 1985, the pair was as close as ever. They enjoyed their private lives together and only recently did Jim release his autobiography titled ‘Mercury and Me’. In it, he shared details of their relationship. They had worn wedding rings in public, and Freddie saw Jim as his husband. They lived together until Freddie’s tragic demise. Jim was by Freddie’s side through it all.
A True Friend
Despite the way their romantic relationship ended, Freddie and Mary Austin remained close for the rest of Freddie’s life. He was quoted speaking of Mary “All my lovers asked me why they couldn’t replace Mary, but it’s simply impossible,” he said, “The only friend I’ve got is Mary, and I don’t want anybody else. To me, she was my common-law wife. To me, it was a marriage.” When he died, he left a lot of his belongings to her as well as his house and the royalties to his music.
