In February 2008, the undercover Dutch journalist Peter de Vries covertly taped Joran as the young man confessed to the disposal of Natalee’s body. He said the young woman had been drunk, suffered a seizure, and died. He also said he had an accomplice who helped him get rid of her body by dumping it in the ocean. Sadly, the footage had not been taken with legal means and it could not be presented as evidence. The police tried to arrest him, though a judge dismissed it.

February 1st of the same year proved to be an important date. Dutch media started reporting how Joran van der Sloot confessed to playing a hand in the disappearance of Natalee Holloway. However, later that same day, the young man went on record to say he pandered to what the man wanted and that he was actually innocent. Meanwhile, the prosecutor’s office in Aruba reopened the case before the day ended.
