Apparently, the rock pick and backpack were the only things that stood between his body and the lion in this unfortunate ordeal. He then used his weapon to strike the lion again before his unexpected savior came. “That’s when a blur on my left side grabbed the lion by its throat- turns out it was the momma bear. I heard a tremendous screeching, some growling noises.”
