Paul and Linda McCartney – RAM (1971)
While Paul and Linda McCartney are not the first or last famous couple in history, most don’t know they recorded an album together! When the Beatles broke up in 1970, Paul McCartney began experimenting with other artists, including his wife. The album signals Paul’s departure from The Beatles and has a totally different sound. Jon Landau of Rolling Stone stated, “Ram represents the nadir in the decomposition of ’60s rock thus far.” Linda has breathless vocals on the album, and of course, Paul McCartney did an amazing job.
The Velvet Underground & Nico – The Velvet Underground & Nico (1966)
This album was actually a total flop when it was released, but went on to become one of the most influential albums of all time! Brian Eno stated that while the album only sold 30,000 copies, “everyone who bought one of those 30,000 copies started a band.” This was The Velvet Underground’s debut album and it was recorded while the band was on Andy Warhol’s Exploding Plastic Inevitable Tour. The album cover feature’s a Warhol image of a banana. While the album was a commercial failure when it was released, it went on to make Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. It led to the formation of many subgenres of rock and alternative music.
