When he wrote the screenplay for Blazing Saddles, Mel Brooks thought about each word carefully. There was intent in every word written, whether it was to make viewers laugh or cry, or simply enhance the plot. An excellent example is the scene where Mongo rides his bull into town, and you hear some Mexican guy say, “Mongo! Santa Maria!” This is a reference to the famous Cuban jazz musician Mongo Santamaria, added particulary by Brooks for that very reason.

A Sing-Along À La Mel Brooks

In a scene towards the end of the movie, Hedley Lamarr along with his men ride into the fake town that Sheriff Bart and Waco Kid set up. For a brief moment, the camera cuts away and turns to Lilly von Schtupp and a few German soldiers who are singing a drinking song. The song which they are singing is the same song that Gene Wilder and Zero Mostel sang together with Kenneth Mars in The Producers.
