An Equal Exchange
The legendary and hilarious comedian Gene Wilder first began collaborating with Mel Brooks on a little film called The Producers. When Brooks wanted to put Wilder in Blazing Saddles, Wilder cut a deal – he would be in Brooks’ film if Brooks looked over a script that Wilder began writing and make that script into a movie as well. Brooks agreed and that script turned out to be for the Oscar-nominated film Young Frankenstein.
Trailblazing On Passing Gas
Many times, Brooks’ humor comes in slapstick form. He has people fall down, bang their heads on windowsills, and generally get hurt. In addition, he is a trailblazer in a particular slapstick gag – that which involves passing gas and in Blazing Saddles, he included farting sounds. The infamous scene shows cowboys seated around a campfire while drinking coffee and eating baked beans. Brooks thought that the cowboys’ stomachs would inevitably gurgle and he thought of making it happen on screen.
