On The Cutting Room Floor
With regard to comedy, Mel Brooks pushed boundaries and this delighted people who had a sense of humor but the studio was worried. Brooks was urged to cut scenes, though he only cut the one that is the most risque. The scene where Bart is together with Lili von Shtupp in her dressing room was taken out. In this scene, she tempts him by blowing out the candle and asking, “Is it true what they say about you people?” but Bart replies, “I hate to disillusion you, ma’am, but you’re sucking on my arm.”
A Nod To The Original
When making a parody, it’s always a good idea to add a nod towards the original. That’s why Brooks thought that he ought to include legendary Western movie actor John Wayne in Blazing Saddles. Apparently, they met by chance at the Warner Brothers lot and started talking about Brooks’ film, with Wayne telling Brooks that he had heard about it. Brooks wrote a short part for Wayne, but the Western film superstar eventually declined and said, “Naw, I can’t do a movie like that, but I’ll be first in line to see it!”
