A Victim
Unfortunately, the fact that Becca was the star on her team did not stop her peers from making fun of her and even bullying her throughout the year. Becca stood out whether on or off the field. As she told The Associated Press, “They’d post pictures on the internet and say, ‘Is that her jersey or her boyfriend’s?’” she added, “I got laughed at the entire year.” Sadly, her classmates couldn’t cope with an excellent female kicker, no matter how good she was.
A Needed Change
With football, it’s pretty simple. If you’re good, you play. If not, you don’t. It’s the ultimate meritocracy. In Becca’s case, even this meritocracy couldn’t repel the sexism and biases that are in sports until today. While the bullying at Queen Creek could shape her and prepare her for real life, where things can get tough, Becca needed a change. She decided to transfer to Basha High School as a result, which was just 20 minutes away from Queen Creek. Becca made the decision to stick to the path she was following that was best for her.
