One day later, Becca went into the Queen Creek athletic director’s office and stated that she wanted to play football. She said it in a calm manner, just as she had gone into the kicking camp with her head held high. The athletic director, Paul Reynolds, laughed and said: “I guess you should go for it and try out for the team.” Although the response was far from positive, it was one Becca would use as fuel for her rising motivation.

Trying Out

Applying the tools she had learned while training with Zendejas several times a week, Becca tried out for the junior varsity team at Queen Creek. Of course, she was not intimidated by being the only girl trying out, and she remained poised and calm. Unsurprisingly, she made it onto the team. Throughout the first season of her kicking footballs, she connected 30 of 33 point-after-attempts and was a perfect 4-for-4 on field goals. Her long was 30 yards. To an outsider, Becca was an impressive addition to the team. To Becca, it was what she expected of herself, as anything less would be considered a failure in her eyes.
