Close Call
The Olympics have their fair share of close calls. Laurine had a near-collision with fellow cyclist, French Virginie Cueff. To avoid crashing, she rode up onto the side barrier, appearing horizontal! Talk about amazing!

Competing in the Olympics is a lot—and we mean A LOT—of pressure. The whole world is watching, and you have to represent your home country. But for some athletes, the pressure is even higher. Take, for example, Cathy Freeman, who ran in the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games. Out of a team of 628, she was one of only eleven Aboriginals to compete. Not only was she representing her country and her people, she also had the opportunity to present Australia as a progressive and accepting society. To this point, she was chosen to light the Olympic flame. However, this was not even her biggest accomplishment. More importantly, she won the 400 meter race with a time of 49.11 seconds, making her Australia’s 100th Olympic champion!
