When the song was completed, Reid showed ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ to Elton John. The reaction he got was surprising, as Elton reportedly asked the band “Are you mad?”, referring to the length of the song. The song was just over six minutes long. The producers tried to convince Freddie to shorten the song, but he refused and stuck to his vision. It’s a good thing he did since the song shot to number one on the music charts when it was released in the UK, breaking records at the time.

Accidental Icon

Freddie was iconic in many ways. One of them being for the bottomless mic he performed with. As it turns out, this tradition began by accident. At the beginning of Queen’s career, while Freddie was singing, the mic stand broke in two, but he was adamant to see the song through without stopping just to switch the mic stand. Ever since, it became a regular prop in their performances.
