Even though he went about it with care, he knew that it would be foolish to jump right in without any preparation. John is actually a captain at the fire department, so he was aware that the structure might be unstable. It was not wise to just go somewhere underground impulsively. This was the reason he came up with a plan. However, there was no way for him to executive it by himself.

He needed to ask for some assistance if he wanted to keep going, so he hit up some of his pals. He wanted to ensure that he would have some backups in case anything went wrong down there. He had experience with rescuing people, so he knew it might mean the end for him if the old lip collapsed and fell down. This was not unlike what they had trained for on the job. There were some things that he needed to do before he could launch an exploration of his discovery.
