Constable Patty Desormeau
Constable Patty Desormeau is yet another recipient of the award. This member of the Calgary Police Service Diversity Resources Unit was inspired by the Ontario autism registry. She used this inspiration to develop what they call the vulnerable persons self-registry. It was put in place to help the caregivers and parents of vulnerable people. This way, the police had important points of contact should an emergency ever happen.

Nestor Aravena Bonastre
Nestor is yet another Calgarian who was recognized during the Chief’s Awards Gala. He saw a teen dangling her legs over the edge of the bridge. When he approached the young girl, she told him that she wanted to take her own life right then. He convinced her not to do this. The police explained, “As he got closer, she went over the ledge and hung by her hands. Nestor made a split-second decision and grabbed hold of her arms to stop her falling”. They continued by saying, “Nestor hung there, leaning over the bridge, holding the girl for more than three minutes in 35-degree temperatures before police arrived. An officer arrived, leaned over the edge and grabbed hold of the girl’s leg to pull both her and Nestor back to a safe location.”
