Before he got too close he suddenly realized that there was a great chance its mother would be in the vicinity. When an animal’s young is threatened, the mother can become very dangerous and cause serious harm to someone. So after taking a look around the area for the moose’s mother he understood that it was alone.

Even without much knowledge about moose, he knew this calf was really young. He guessed maybe she was two weeks old at most. Sadly, this calf appeared inconsolable and terribly distressed. Thus, Plucas surmised what event led to this.
