Back in the day, a number of celebs served in the armed forces before they pursued the career they are the most well known for. Elvis Presley is one great example. He served in the US army in 1958. Elvis was actually already a household name at this point, so many men in his squad were serving alongside one of their heroes! He ended his service early because his mother had a heart attack.
