You probably guessed this by now, but the golden portals in Doctor Strange were made with special effects. In this case, there wasn’t all that much added digitally compared to the others we’ve seen so far. Aside from the ring of the portal and the backdrop behind it, most of the scene was actually real!

Terminator Genisys
CGI is at a whole new level these days; twenty years ago, filmmakers wouldn’t have even dreamed about such advanced technology. In this shot, you can see just how much work went into the molten lava effect on the man’s face. The small dots on the actor’s face were to map out where the effects would be placed exactly.
