The Filming Spot
Kelly’s Heroes seems like it should have been shot in France, Italy, or Poland. It is, after all, a World War II film set in Europe. But you’d be mistaken. The majority of the film was shot in a country that no longer exists. The Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, to be precise.
Why Yugoslavia?
So, why was the socialist state of southeastern Europe chosen as the location for the movie’s filming? There are a couple of reasons behind this. For starters, the country’s army still had a large number of Sherman tanks. This was advantageous because they were required for the shoot. But, maybe, more importantly, there was the financial motive. By law, movie studios in Yugoslavia could not accept earnings from other film screenings outside of the Federal Republic, but that money may be used to pay for this project.
