Based On A True Story
During World War II, American soldiers infiltrate behind enemy lines in Europe to loot a bank. Sounds a little far-fetched, right? In truth, it isn’t the case. Kelly’s Heroes is based on a genuine story, albeit very loosely. Nazi Gold: The Sensational Story of the World’s Greatest Robbery – and the Greatest Criminal Cover-Up presented the story.
Reichsbank’s Gold
The robbery of the Reichsbank’s gold is the subject of that book, written by Douglas Botting and Ian Sayer. It’s been estimated that the total cost was $2.5 billion. As the Allies closed in on Berlin at the conclusion of WWII, the gold was carried away aboard trains. However, it was then taken. Investigators discovered a bleak world of corruption, racketeering, and gangs, prompting a Watergate-style cover-up.
