Costco is recognized for its generous refund policy. Still, after a redesign of its Kirkland Signature Performance One golf balls failed to meet expectations, the retailer decided to phase out the product entirely. In 2016, the golf balls were first released. Customers were ecstatic, but Acushnet Holdings Corp., the parent company of Titleist Golf Balls, was not. Costco’s product allegedly violated Titleist patents, prompting a legal battle between the two companies. Costco revoked its original product after the case was settled in 2018. Many customers complained about a lack of toughness of the latest version of the wholesaler’s Performance One golf balls.

Threatened Seafood

After this eight-month Greenpeace project persuaded the retailer to replace several wild-caught species from its seafood section, Costco implemented a sustainable seafood policy in 2011. According to the environmental group, “Costco must leverage its massive buying power to leverage positive change in our oceans.” For its “Oh-No-Costco” campaign, Greenpeace claims to have gathered more than 100,000 signatures. As a result, wild seafood species such as Atlantic cod and halibut, shark, and Bluefin tuna are no longer sold at the store because they are “identified as being in great danger.” In 2019, Costco introduced some wild salmon kinds to its menu.
