Disagreement On The Name

The writers initially had difficulty agreeing on a key detail of the film – its title. The movie’s working title was Ten X and it is actually a Malcolm X reference, but this ended up getting changed to Black Bart. However, the writers still did not like this change and considered The Purple Sage as a potential name. Then, Mel Brooks came up with Blazing Saddles while he was in the shower, his wife loved the title, and the rest, as they say, is history.

It might be hard to believe but Sheriff Bart was not exactly a popular figure in the beginning. He had to literally hold a gun to his own head so that the townspeople would let him free. Mel Brooks got the idea for this from something which happened in his childhood. When Mel was a kid, he tried stealing some gum and a water pistol from a store but the clerk caught him so little Mel pointed the “pistol” at the clerk and threatened to pull the trigger.
