Speaking of Mel Brooks’s roots, did you know that he actually served in the military during World War II? That’s right. He actually enlisted into the army when he was only 17 years old. He was sent to the Army Specialized Training Program because of his high IQ. Later he went on to server in the 1104th Engineer Combat Group in Europe.

When the Blazing Saddles was first released, it received much international acclaim. However the movie soon reached iconic status and is still managing to win recognition and praise years later. In the year 2000, the movie was ranked as the sixth greatest American Comedy of all time, but the American Film Institute. The flick also had some support from other high profile figures, like the former New York Mayor Mike Bloomberg, who said in an interview that this is still his favorite movie of all time.
