The Mysterious Hillsborough Hero

Back in 1989, England suffered it’s worst disaster in sports history with 96 deaths and 766 injuries- the human crush at Hillsborough football stadium. Due to a Facebook post and new BBC documentary, one survivor found the man who saved him on that tragic day. Joe Smith spotted himself, as an 8 year old child on the newly released footage, resting on a man’s shoulders. After his post got shared over 145,000 times, John McMahon contacted him to say he was the one who rescued Joe. They met up and Joe insisted this man was a hero, but John stayed modest.

Another Beautiful Family Reunion

Of course, World War II also led to many families being separated. With Operation Shamrock, German children, like Edward Werder, were evacuated to Ireland because homes were destroyed in the Allied bombing. Growing up in Ireland, Edward lost touch with his German family and his passport had to be surrendered to authorities once his records were lost. He married, had kids and grand-kids. Then, granddaughter Laura saw that the Werder family was referenced in Dusseldorf on Facebook. She found her father’s sister Jielsa who was living in Britain. Finally, after Edward got a passport with a solicitor’s aid, he reunited with his family in Germany.
