One he was hired, Joe had said, “I feel a lot younger being at work again. I want to be out meeting people. My life can be rather lonely. You come in with shopping and you have no one to talk to. You’re not in touch with people at all.” He added, “Plus, I would like to pay my own rent rather than rely on the council.” During his time in the military, Joe served as a signalman for the Royal Signals of the 6th Airborne Division. From 1946 to 1948, he also worked as a wireless operator.
