Andrew Dice Clay
Lorne Micheals’ selection of comic Andrew Dice Clay to host a 1990 episode of the show sparked outrage even before it aired. Women’s groups complained, cast members were outraged (see the next slide for more), and NBC insisted on a 7-second delay to allow for censorship of any profanities. Clay eventually conformed to the script, and the episode was very dull, but Clay was never invited back.
Nora Dunn
Because of Andrew Dice Clay’s appearance, actress Nora Dunn was purportedly blacklisted from SNL. The five-year series veteran boycotted Clay’s appearance, and as a result, was left out of the following episode, which was the season finale, and was dismissed. However, Jon Lovitz claims that preparations to let Dunn go existed prior to the Dice Clay incident: “It’s the last show of the season. Nora… she was a real pain. [She] was difficult to get along with, and they weren’t going to ask her back… This is how the press operates. And believe me, I’m on the inside of this. They are unaware of the situation. It’s as though she’s only doing it for attention. It’s her final act. They are not inviting her back to the show.”
