Elvis Costello

Elvis Costello created one of the most iconic musical moments in Saturday Night Live history in 1977 when he rejected his record company (who wanted him to play the hit “Less Than Zero”) and instead burst into the song “Radio Radio.” While it made for terrific television, Costello’s stunt irritated producers who were caught off guard. Costello was banned from SNL for over a decade, but he has since returned and even made light of the incident on the 25th Anniversary Special.

Ashlee Simpson

Ashlee Simpson performed the most famous Irish Jig in television history on Saturday Night Live in 2004. After a recording of her song “Pieces of Me” – replete with vocals – began playing over the entrance to her second song, the pop sensation broke into the awkward dance, revealing that her earlier performance had been lip-synced. Simpson initially blamed the error on her band, then on acid reflux, but the damage had already been done to her reputation. She returned to SNL in 2005 but has not appeared since.
