When it comes to ranking the most intelligent dog breed in the world, people may argue endlessly about it as they would tend to think that their dog is the smartest! The American Kennel Club, an organization that regulates the standards of dog breed, acknowledges 190 dog breeds. As there are many different kinds and breeds, it just makes sense that their level of intellect and their abilities also vary. Some of them have a very good sense of smell, while others are very good at communicating. Others, however, are extremely good at following commands. Dog trainers and veterinarians have helped us in compiling a list of the smartest dog breeds in the world. The first 30 items are arranged according to the increasing order of their intelligence.

Bernese Mountain Dog

This breed of dog is quite large in size. An average adult Bernese Mountain Dog weighs around 100 pounds which makes them quite intimidating. However, unlike what most people think, they are actually quite intelligent. They may need a lot of exercise, so if you have a huge backyard, then these dogs might be perfect for you. These dogs do well outdoors with their smarts and thick coat. Also known as “Berners,” these Bernese Mountain Dogs are known for being gentle, especially with children. Also, Berners are known to become attached to one family member more than another, so be ready to hear questions like, “Mom, why does Champ like Dad more than he likes me?”

Old English Sheepdog

These cute dogs are famous for their faces fully covered in fur that you would think they don’t have any eyes. Old English Sheepdogs have such furry bodies that make them really chubby. However, don’t be fooled into thinking that these dogs are just big pillows. They are known for following commands very well. This is because they were bred to herd flocks of animals on farms. Although their most ideal home is in the rural area, they can actually do as well in an urban setting if they are trained well.
