Her Real Big Break
It was in 1983 that Reba had a song reach the top spot on the Billboard charts. This happened after she released Unlimited, her fifth album. She did not like the lack of creative control over her career and how they forced her to make country-pop ballads, which prompted her to leave Mercury. The following year, she signed a contract with MCA Nashville Records and released her seventh album called Just a Little Love.

Reba was still unhappy with the direction of her career, but luckily, she had the opportunity to exercise full creative control with a new album of songs full of previously released singles. My Kind of Country had two songs that became Billboard No. 1 hits. The critics loved them as well. At long last, Reba was finally happy with her music.
