After she graduated from high school, Reba attended college at Southern Oklahoma State University in Durant. During her time there, she took up education and minored in music. When she was not spending her time studying, her life revolved around music. For starters, Reba continued to sing locally whenever she had the opportunity. There was a time when she was classmates with another future country star: Garth Brooks! Originally, Reba wanted to be an elementary school teacher just like Jacqueline, however, a series of events would put her on a completely different path in life.

Life-Changing Rodeo Performances

Her life changed completely in 1974. At the time, she got a job to sing the national anthem for the National Rodeo in Oklahoma City. This was how country music star Red Steagall discovered the extraordinary young woman. He was performing at the same venue on that day and was blown away by Reba’s singing skills. He helped her start her very own country music career in Nashville. She created a demo tape and signed a record deal with Mercury Records only a year later.
