There was uncertainty among the firefighters as to why the mother was not with her kids. In the first place, it was totally illogical for the babies to be there. If they were in the wild, it would have made more sense, but that was not the case.

The firemen had to work out the layout of the sewer first before they could go on with the rescue. It is likely that the mother and father of the animals were there, but when the firefighters arrived, they were spooked. They still have to find out what animals they’ve saved.
