The engineer did not buy a home until he was an older man. During his interview with Daily Mail, he went into detail about how he did not want to get a mortgage since he would have been financially incapacitated otherwise. When he was finally able to come up with the funds to pay for a home, it was nothing like what most people had in mind. “I had stopped thinking in provincial terms and I had thought like a free bird engineer,” he recounted.
