Everyone will agree that Netflix has become one of the biggest forces in the entertainment industry ever since it was launched all the way back in 2007. The streaming service is now a giant in the world of television programs and movies. In order to keep its edge, however, the network has to ensure that it comes out with relevant content on the regular. This pursuit includes making the tough call to cancel or renew its TV programs. There are several reasons why Netflix would choose to ax TV shows – sometimes the story has simply reached its natural conclusion, though there are also cases when poor ratings have brought about its doom.
We have created this list to keep you up to date about the shows that unfortunately did not make the cut. Read on and keep your fingers crossed that your favorites made it out alive!
The Get Down
Much to everyone’s disappointment, The Get Down wasn’t lucky enough to live past its first season. The hip-hop musical basically suffered from a huge budget and costly production delays. Regardless, the showrunner and critically-acclaimed director Baz Luhrmann remains hopeful that the show’s spirit will live on. Let’s keep our fingers crossed that it will experience a revival in the future! His Facebook post about the issue read, “As for the real future of the show, the spirit of ‘The Get Down,’ and the story it has begun to tell … it has its own life. One that lives on today and will continue to be told somewhere, somehow, because of you, the fans and the supporters.”
Hemlock Grove
Hemlock Grove fans were generally fine, even though Netflix decided that the show was going to end in 2015. The reason behind this is that the creators already knew that it would be the show’s final season and thus steered the plot to an organic conclusion. Eli Roth, the executive producer, said, “We are so grateful to the fans of Hemlock Grove who have championed the series so intensely over two seasons… We are looking forward to taking the last and final season into some dark and unexpected places, and to giving viewers the killer finale you’d come to expect from Hemlock Grove.”
