In the arm forces, honking two times to warn other people that you are backing up is a common practice. Soldiers that are back from service have the tendency to do this out of sheer habit.

The American nation is represented by the American flag, so the flag deserves a lot of respect. When soldiers see the flag being raised, they will stand immediately, and at times, salute. Nobody’s taking a knee here.
