In a 47,000-seat stadium, which is often half-empty, the Rice Owls play. That makes for an experience of a game day that isn’t great. The stadium dates back to 1950, and in particular, its upper bowl has been poorly maintained. Upgrades are long overdue, fans say. But to serve even the smaller numbers of fans who turn out, there are too few concession stands. A lot of people in a capacity crowd would go home hungry.

The home of the Memphis Tigers in the 1960s looks futuristic. In 1965, the Liberty Bowl Memorial was built, and the bowl-like structure did not age well. Seeing the area half empty only accentuates all the proof that the place is super outdated. Memphis pulls in less than half of the stadium’s capacity for a typical game, and that’s generous.
