Michelin Guide In World War II
Big Joe, played by Telly Savalas, is trying to figure out where the best place to stay in Nancy, France, right at the opening of the movie. Joe is, oddly enough, utilizing a Michelin tourist guidebook to seek such a location in the city, which is located in the country’s northwest. Yes, it’s odd, but it’s factually correct. These publications were undoubtedly utilized by Allied troops during WWII.
Using Michelin Guides
Staff commanders had concerns about how troops would navigate if the retreating Nazis reversed or erased road signs when planning the Normandy assault, believe it or not. As a result, the US government surreptitiously reprinted the most recent Michelin guide, which was published in 1939. As a result, when Allied forces stormed the beaches on June 6, 1944, they grabbed the handy books. They were also useful throughout the rest of the fight.
