When I understood that something had gone horribly wrong, my confusion gave way to terror. As I attempted to piece together what might have caused this indignation, knots formed in my gut. Equally perplexed, my husband proposed that we go to my parents’ home to face the issue head-on and learn what had happened while we were away.

My phone buzzed once again while we were driving to my parents’ house; it was Aunt Sarah this time. “You must come over immediately,” she insisted, her voice tense with anxiety. “What’s happening?” She sidestepped the question and insisted that we move quickly. As we raced to the house where I grew up, anxiety tore at me. There seemed to be a serious problem, and I couldn’t get rid of the impression that it was more serious than I had thought.
