Numerous texts, voicemails, and missed calls—all from different family members. There was obviously a problem, and I felt concerned about the urgency of their statements. Aunt Sarah had left five voicemails, my uncle had called three times, and even my normally quiet cousin had contacted me. Every alert was like a blow to the gut. With a quivering voice, I questioned my husband, “Have you seen these?” His look grew increasingly concerned as he shook his head and browsed through his own alerts.

As I went through increasingly desperate messages, my heart sunk. “What kept you from telling us?” “How did you accomplish this?” ‘How could you go through with it without us?’ said my aunt Karen. When I understood that something had gone horribly wrong back home, my confusion gave way to despair. I looked at my spouse and saw that he was equally perplexed, carefully going through his alerts. We still didn’t understand any of it.
