The stars of the show can’t actually work behind the counter in the shop due to strict privacy laws. Since they’ve become as famous as they are now, fans and tourists constantly come into the store to take pictures of them. This puts the privacy of whoever is at the pawn counter at risk.

This all started when PBS did a special on the pawnshop. Of course, this caused the business to jump, so Rick began to pursue the idea of doing a reality show after this. HBO expressed interest first. In fact, they even developed a pilot, but they focused more on the negative aspects of the shop, which the employees didn’t want. The show ended up with The History Channel but took off in a completely different direction.
