odd barking
Two nights later, Tom laid in bed, staring at the ceiling. A gentle breeze swept through his window, and he heard faint barking. Tom sat up and strained his ears to hear the sound. “Max?” he muttered, his heart racing. The barking continued, both familiar and unique. Confusion turned to determination as he resolved to locate the source. He grabbed his flashlight from the nightstand and took a deep breath before walking out.

With his heart beating, Tom snuck downstairs and slipped out the back door. The cool night air filled his lungs as the barking became more audible. He focused his beam on the yard, checking the ground and bushes. “Max, is that you?” he asked, his voice cracking. The barking appeared to originate from Max’s tomb. He took timid steps across the yard, his eyes darting left and right. Nothing moved in the dark.
