Twelve-year-old Tom was devastated by the unexpected death of his dog, Max. Max’s favorite toy was placed next to him by Tom after his father, Mark, buried him in their backyard. Tom couldn’t get rid of the sound of familiar barking outside his window two nights later. Confused and desperate, he made the decision to look into it. Tom felt a mixture of terror and hope as the barking increased in volume.

Mark and Tom stood in the backyard with shovels in hand. The setting sun produced lengthy shadows as they cautiously lowered Max to the earth. Tom, heartbroken, placed Max’s favorite toy beside him. Mark rubbed Tom’s shoulder in a wordless display of reassurance before beginning to cover Max with soil. A single tear streamed down Tom’s cheek as he whispered, “Goodbye, Max.” They stood silently, marking the location with a little rock.
