Mrs. Nabors had tried unsuccessfully to locate a mascot for the upcoming book fair. Jake the dog, she reasoned, would be the ideal candidate. Jake’s presence had undoubtedly given some of the kids hope. They may not have realized it at the time, but they required the experience of playing with the puppy. A dog can make everyone smile and can make even the most depressed individuals laugh and temporarily forget their problems. While Jake was the first dog to represent the school, he was far from the last. There have been others, such as Dottie, a service dog. We hope Jake will share the spotlight, even if he believes himself the top dog at Jefferson Elementary.
