Michael Oher remains critical of the film based on his life. This does not only have to do with the way the film portrayed him as both a football player and a person. It also has something to do with how he is perceived today. He laments that he is rarely seen in the way he wants people to perceive him: a hard-working athlete who put in the time and effort necessary to accomplish his dream. It is disappointing for him to be seen as the football player whose life has been turned into a film.

If you found the depiction of his time at Briarcrest Christian School to be too Hollywood-like, you hit the mark. Not unlike the rest of the film, the true events had been embellished in order to evoke more emotion from the viewers. The film shows teachers who immediately changed their mind about him when they saw him open up. Apart from this, the coach even delivers a persuasive and poignant speech in the hope of swaying the officials in Oher’s favor. The real events had been more complicated, however. The coach indeed advocated for his case, though he had to undergo academic requirements before his admission.
