Aside from carefully considering every reference and word in the script, Brooks definitely knew what he wanted to happen when he added a few fart references in the movie. Governor Le Petomane, his character, was named after Joseph Pujol, a “flatulence artist” whose stage name was Le Petomane. The performer from France could uncannily pass gas on command because of his rather strong abdominal muscles. With regard to his name, ‘peter’ means fart while the suffix ‘mane’ means maniac, so his name means a fart maniac in French.

An Ad Lib That Stands Out

The comedy is, needless to say, iconic for all the hilariously written and witty lines, but one line certainly stands out. After Bart experiences the townspeople’s hatred towards him, Waco Kid consoled him and said this: “You’ve got to remember that these are just simple farmers. These are people of the land. The common clay of the new West. You know… morons.” The last part – “you know… morons” – was actually improvised and ad libbed and it caused Cleavon Little to crack up genuinely.
