Is Technology Evil?
The Amish do not consider technology to be inherently wicked; rather, they believe that it has the capacity to be so. Due to the likelihood that it may be abused in the community and the possibility that it will inspire people to leave the Amish community and assimilate into neighboring civilization, it is being restricted. The Amish are concerned that if popular worldwide media is introduced into their society, foreign values may become ingrained in their culture, something they are zealously attempting to avoid.
The Horse-And-Buggy Method
Because the Amish believe that increasing mobility will be detrimental to the community instead of beneficial, they oppose increased mobility. They worry that the usage of automobiles would weaken community relationships. A historic Amish practice, they feel that using a horse-and-buggy technique maintains them connected to their roots and their ancient ways of life. An automobile or two may be seen in an Amish settlement, but the residents are not permitted to drive them. They are, however, permitted to employ outsiders to drive these vehicles within the community if they do so in a safe and legal manner.
