In its most basic form, the Amish religion is pacifist, eschewing violence and placing a strong value on repentance. Because of their religious beliefs, the Amish refuse to serve in the military or support the death sentence. The Amish are pacifists who believe they are following Jesus’ command to love those who hate them. The Amish hate all forms of violence, including firearms.

Faceless dolls are frequently given as gifts to young Amish children as a form of entertainment. Pride and vanity are discouraged by expressionless and blank faces. According to a 2007 sociological report, the dolls’ lack of facial features is due to the fact that “all are alike in God’s view,” and the lack of facial features is in accordance with the Bible’s ban against graven images. The majority of Amish doll makers chose to keep their identity a secret from the public.
