Roy Emerson
Emerson is the Australian former number one who won 12 Major singles titles and 16 Grand Slam tournament men’s doubles titles. Yeah, he was that good. Plus he is the only male player to have completed a Career Grand Slam (winning titles at all four Grand Slam events) in both singles and doubles. His total 28 major titles are an all-time record for a male amateur player. He is also one of only seven men to win all four majors in his career, additionally he was the first male player to win 12 majors. Along with Novak Djokovic, he is one of only two male players to win 6 Australian Championships, plus he won five of them consecutively (1963–67). Since then, his 12 wins have been surpassed but he is still only one of five tennis players all-time to win multiple slam sets in two disciplines, only matched by Margaret Court, Martina Navratilova, Frank Sedgman and Serena Williams.
Jimmy Connors
I’ll admit, I’ve never heard of Jimmy Connors but after a little digging, here’s what I learned – the man is a tennis God. He may have only earned over 8 million dollars from career titles but it wasn’t the money that fueled Connors. He lives and breathes tennis – the man has won over 109 career titles! This includes 8 Grand Slam Singles Titles: 1 Australian, 2 Wimbledon, and 5 US Open. In 1974, he dominated the court with an impeccable 99-4 record (yes, our jaws dropped too, but he carried on to dominate the court for 24 years). Connors still holds the record for ATP tour titles of 109 and was inducted into the Tennis Hall of Fame in 1998. What an impressive career, he certainly didn’t have that make money now attitude but rather a love for the game.
