Chase didn’t believe actress Drea de Matteo was Italian enough for a part. That’s why in the pilot, you just see her as an unnamed hostess. Can you believe she almost never played Adriana, Christopher’s girlfriend? She only was cast as the beloved Adriana once the series got picked up. Thank goodness! Also we are still broken up over her death.

Producers originally wanted Lorraine Bracco to play Carmela Soprano, who the lovely Edie Falco went on to play. After seeing Bracco in a similar role for Goodfellas, they felt it would suit her. However, Bracco requested the role of Dr. Jennifer Melfi instead. She wanted more of a challenge. Later on she confessed, “I was not ready for how f***ing difficult Dr. Melfi was to play. I am an explosive girl. I am loud. I am full of life and full of all kinds of bull****, and I have to sit on every emotion, every word, everything, to play this character.” She was nominated for three Golden Globes and four Emmys for her role as Dr. Melfi.
